His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces on Thursday, 12th December 2019 led Kenyans in celebrating this year’s Jamhuri Day at the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

The ceremony was marked by a Trooping of the Colour Parade by Laikipia Air Base, Fly Past by the Kenya Air Force and a Presidential Fanfare played by the Ceremonial Trumpeters of the Defence Forces Band. Trooping of the Colour is an important military tradition symbolizing the spirit, might and pride of a regiment. Colours bear battle honors, and badges granted to Regiments which commemorate gallant actions of its members. This is the second time that Laikipia Air Base trooped its Colour since its formation in 1974. To mark the end, the parade saluted the President in three cheers, before marching off with Kenya Air Force taking lead, followed by Kenya Army and Kenya Navy respectively.

Speaking during the event, the President urged citizens to celebrate the milestones that Kenya has achieved since independence. He appreciated that Kenya has gradually grown thus accelerating development in the country. He also honored the heroes and heroines who fought for the country’s independence. “Kenyans should unite and fight the remnants of poverty disease, illiteracy, inequality, division and conflicts from our nation. This monumental task towards a sustainable development can only be achieved if we remain united, focused and driven, by the desire to always put our country first.” added the President.

In his closing remarks the President emphasized on unity and togetherness of the nation in a mantra “Kenya kwanza, leo, kesho na milele”, which is committing like the independence era generation to doing all that is necessary for Kenya to thrive and to achieve our collective aspirations for a brighter and better tomorrow.

The event was also graced by Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, Q.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Barbados, H. E First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya H. E Hon. Dr. William Ruto, Defence Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Raychelle Omamo, Cabinet Secretaries, Chief of the Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe, Service Commanders, Members of the Diplomatic Corps among other distinguished guests.
