KDF Emerges Winners in the 3rd Leg of the National Sportpesa Boxing League

Kenya Defence Force Boxing team emerged winners of the 3rd leg of the National Sportpesa Boxing league with 19 points whose finals took place on Saturday 10 June 2017 at Ananas Mall in Thika town.

Spte Simon Mulinge from Defence Headquartes Camp Admin Unit (DHQ CAU) defeated Charles Macharia from Dallas 2-1 in Fly Weight. In the Light Welter Weight, Spte Victor Odhiambo from 78 tank battalion in Isiolo emerged victorious against Patrick Owino from Ken Track by 3-0.

Kenya Air Force’s Spte Edwin Okongo of Middle Weight won 2-1 against his opponent Humphrey Ochieng from Kenya Police Service while Spte Fred Onyango from DHQ CAU won 3-0 against Tobias Akeyo from Kenya Police Service in the Heavy Weight division.

Gnr Fred Ramogi from DHQ CAU was declared the winner in Super Heavy Weight after Kimathi Kinoti from Kenya Police Service gave him a free match.

Kenya Police Service emerged first runners up with 18 points while Ken Track finished in third position with six (6) points. Nairobi finished the tournament with five (5) points, Prisons four (4) points, Kenyatta National Hospital and Coast Region three (3) points each. Dallas, Githurai 44 / Soweto and Omari Kasongo Sports Academy (OKSA) finished with two (2) points each while Thika managed one (1) point at the final whistle.

Other significant wins during the tournament include Cpl Nick Abaka from DHQ CAU who defeated Joseph Odhiambo from Nairobi by 3-0 in Light Heavy Weight in the semi-finals to qualify for finals. Abaka emerged victorious with a 3-0 win against his long-time opponent Elly Ajowi from Kenya Police Service in Light Heavy Weight division to become the player of the day.

The tournament participants included Kenya Defence Forces, Police, Prison, Coast region, Ken Track, Nairobi region, Kenyatta National Hospital, Githurai 44 and Thika.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) president contender Major Paul Tergat thanked the players for the excellent play and urged them to keep the same spirit in future events. He was grateful to Sportpesa for the sponsorship they offered to the Boxing Association of Kenya.

Present during the event were Lt Col Solomon Wandege, Commanding Officer DFMH, Lt Col P B Mung’ori OIC KDF Boxing team, Lt Col P M Njuguna from Public Affairs, John Kameta, President Boxing Association of Kenya, KDF team Manager Ssgt Maingi, KDF Boxing Head Coach Sgt Magima and Elena Sliveka Vice President Hockey.
